How to Study in Germany for Free as an International Student
Why Germany?
Germany is one of the smartest study decisions you can make. Public universities charge little to no tuition fees, even for international students. Germany is a global leader in engineering, technology, and research.
The Cost Reality
Most public universities in Germany charge only a semester fee of €150 to €350 (around £130 to £300). This covers administration, public transport passes, and student services. There are no tuition fees for most undergraduate and many postgraduate programs.
Private universities do charge tuition (€10,000 to €30,000 per year) but offer more English-taught programs.
Top Universities
- •TU Munich (ranked top 50 globally)
- •Heidelberg University (oldest university in Germany)
- •Humboldt University Berlin
- •RWTH Aachen (top for engineering)
- •University of Hamburg
- •LMU Munich
Language Requirements
Many programs are taught in German, so B2 or C1 German proficiency is required. However, the number of English-taught programs has grown significantly, especially at postgraduate level. Check the DAAD database for English-taught programs.
Living Costs
Living costs in Germany are reasonable compared to the UK: - Rent: €300 to €700 per month (student accommodation) - Food: €200 to €300 per month - Transport: Often included in semester fee - Total: approximately €700 to €1,000 per month
Work Rights
International students can work 120 full days or 240 half days per year. This is enough to cover living costs for many students.
Post-Study Work Visa
After graduation, you can apply for an 18-month job seeker visa to find employment in Germany. Once employed, you can apply for a work permit and eventually permanent residency.
Application Process
- •Apply directly to German universities (no central application system for most)
- •Some universities use uni-assist for international applications
- •Apply 6 to 12 months before your intended start date
- •Intakes: October (Winter Semester) and April (Summer Semester)
Blocked Account Requirement
To get a student visa, you must show proof of financial resources. The standard is a blocked account with approximately €11,208 (for one year). This money is released monthly once you arrive in Germany.
